From Saigon to sailing on the Mekong

Since our last post we’ve moved on quite a bit, we are writing this sailing along the Mekong River on our way to Cambodia. But before we jump too far ahead we thought you might want filling in on what we’ve been getting up to in our last few days in Vietnam… From Nha Trang … Continue reading

Naughty Nha Trang

If you want a party pit stop, then you need to pay Nha Trang a visit. Sitting just off the coast, it has a 6km stretch of lush beach lined with palm trees that you can laze on all day long, and if you want something a bit more active there are plenty of diving … Continue reading

Half way down we found Hoi An

Being one of the country’s more wealthy towns, Hoi An has put itself on the map and has definitely been one of the highlights of our visit to Vietnam. Sightseeing-wise it isn’t the best, but if you are looking for a heavenly spa break or a tailor made suit/dress this is the place you need … Continue reading

Sightseeing in Hue

Moving down to Central Vietnam, our first stop was at the cultural heart of the country, Hue. We stayed in the Jade Hotel, situated on the south bank of the Perfume River, a budget accommodation that more than lived up to expectations. An amazing place to stay if you are penny pinching, it was great … Continue reading

All aboard at Halong Bay

FACT: Sleeper buses are VILE. The one we travelled back from Sapa on was anyway. They would be quite luxurious if you were a dwarf or a petite oriental person, but for us it was a bloody nightmare. If the person behind you has smelly feet, be prepared to gag for the whole journey, it … Continue reading

Sunny Sapa (beware of the stalker)

Taking our first sleeper train to Lao Cai wasn’t as bad as we originally thought. We had to share with a Chinese couple who showed a bit too much affection for a 4 bed cabin, but it wasn’t too bad. The mini bus to Sapa town was a bit mental, making us slightly travel sick, … Continue reading

It doesn’t rain in Hanoi… It pours!

Our time in the capital has come to an end, it’s been a very busy couple of days. From now on, Hanoi will be our central point to travel to the smaller cities across the Northern parts of Vietnam. We checked out a few more temples, found an embalmed tortoise, ate the infamous street food … Continue reading

Good Morning Vietnam!

Vietnam gave us a very wet welcome after our heart-stopping hiccup at the airport. Hiccup referring to the loss of all major documentation on our way to Hong Kong Airport (the Mr left our passports/driving licenses/money/credit cards and visas on a train then tried to blame the Mrs so he felt better). Luckily it was … Continue reading

I Heart Hong Kong

Our stay has come to an end :( and having both been wowed by Paris and New York, we were both blown away by Hong Kong. Safe to say it’s our new fave city! We saved the best till last, by taking the tram up the very steep slope to the top of Victoria Peak, … Continue reading

Hong Kong Hotspots

Beginning on Lantau Island we took the bus to see the big but very beautiful bronze Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, both nestled in Ngong Ping Village.  Then we island hopped back to Kowloon to see the serene sights of the Nan Lian Gardens and the Chi Lin Nunnery, this stunning setting in the middle … Continue reading

Our first day in Hong Kong

And the journey begins…

Our arrival into Hong Kong late last night was very hot and humid, so finding out our budget hostel had air con was good very news, considering it was still 32*C at 10pm. Staying bang in the centre of Tsim Sha Tsui, we were greeted with neon lights and bustling streets, but, after a 24 hour journey the last thing we wanted to do was go exploring. After lying in bed trying to sleep for 12 hours and managing about 4 in total, this morning we decided to get up and see what all the fuss was about. We took the Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, the air was unbelievably muggy, so after going for a wander through the Western District, a quick visit to the Apple Store to buy our spanking new MacBook Air and taking in the views of the Victoria Harbour, we decided to head home and get ready for ‘A Symphony of Lights’ along the Avenue of the Stars.

Arriving at the harbour about 6.30pm we watched the skyscrapers come to life with lights as it got darker. As we awaited the light show which began at 8pm, we could smell something amazing, it was coming from a little stall selling something named Butter Cuttle, we decided we needed to try the harmless looking snack. All I can say is someone could have kindly informed us it was grilled squid before we ate it!!

Anyway, the Light Show was lovely and the view from the Avenue of the Stars was breathtaking, so after a few poses with the bronze statue of the legendary Bruce Lee, we decided to go and sample some of the local cuisine in Hillwood Soho…

Less than 24 hours into our trip we now have a case of food poisoning on our hands, let’s just say it wasn’t the best food we’ve eaten!! McDonalds for breakfast??
